We know today that light acts as a natural clock for many physiological processes. Bright light travels in the form of electric impulses via the eyes and the optical nerves to the "inner clock" of our brain.
The "inner clock" processes the information about light and darkness and instructs other parts of the brain to rhythmically distribute chemical messengers such as the "sleeping hormone" melatonin and the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine which are known as the "good mood makers".
The unit of light intensity is called ‘lux’. One lux corresponds to light intensity produced by one candle at a distance of one meter. On a summer day, sunlight intensity outdoors is approximately 50,000 – 100,000 lux.
These days, many people live and work surrounded by artificial light of a relatively low intensity, for example approximately 500 lux. This may be light enough for our eyes to be able to see but for our brain it remains night. We need at least 2,500 lux in order to positively influence the hormones and neurotransmitters in our brain.
Light therapy mainly employs intense white light which when physically perceived can cause a release of hormones, such as serotonin.
- seasonal depression (SAD), the so-called winter depression
- various kinds of sleep disorders
- premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- compulsive disorders
- alcoholic withdrawal syndrome
- chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
- schizophrenic diseases with depressive component
- treatment of non-seasonal depression
- headaches (approx. 50 % of depressed people complain about headaches and approx. 25 % of headaches patients are depressive)
For the light therapy to be successful it is necessary to look directly into the light box for a few seconds at regular intervals (every 1-2 minutes). When activated, in order to remind the user, the DAVITON emits a 3 second long sound signal every 90 seconds. It is only necessary to look directly into the light box for the period of the sound signal.Please notice that the required distance to the light box unit and the duration of the daily treatment depend on the illumination level of the device. The stronger the light, the further away you can sit – or, the less time per day you will need for your light therapy!
Discount dealers often give lux illumination levels that would only be successful if you were virtually glued to the device. Before purchasing your light therapy system, think about how close you will sit to it or how much time you feel you can “invest” per day.
Our experiences have shown that a space of less than approx. 40 cm from the light is hardly practical. Equally, only a few users spend more than 1 to 1.5 hours per day on treatment. Our findings with respect to duration and spacing are based on these experiences and are therefore not just unrealistic, purely theoretical data.
